Firenze, archeologia di una città

(secoli I a.C. – XIII d.C.)
  • Emiliano Scampoli,

The urban evolution of Florence in the first thirteen centuries of its history is delineated here via a census of the archaeological finds, starting from those documented in the second half of the nineteenth century. The information has been organised and analysed through the use of Geographic Information Systems. The finds have been broken down by period and in terms of function, so as to describe, where possible, the evolution of the buildings and the public spaces and the changes in ways of living and approaches to burial, defence and production over the course of time. The Florentine data are considered within the regional and Italian framework mapped by archaeological research over the last few decades. Theme maps created using GIS further enhance the understanding of the text.

Emiliano Scampoli

University of Siena, Italy

Emiliano Scampoli graduated in Mediaeval Archaeology in 2003 at the University of Florence with a thesis concerning the creation of a GIS for the Florentine archaeological data. This book is his doctoral thesis on Mediaeval Archaeology, which he took at the University of Siena in 2009. For the City Council he has drawn up the maps of archaeological risk for the old city centre of Florence. His interests focus on the use of information technology applied to cultural assets and web mapping, especially through open source systems. In addition to several essays related to Florentine archaeological research, he has published with Cantini, Cianferoni and Francovich: Firenze prima degli Uffizi. Lo scavo di via de' Castellani. Contributi per un'archeologia urbana fra tardo antico ed età moderna (Firenze, 2007).
