The volume contains the transcription of the reports presented at the International Conference held in Florence on 14th and 15th June 2012: there are 15 original essays, written (upon request) by authoritative scholars of various Italian and foreign universities, on the important contributions made by their papyrus finds over more than a century to the knowledge of the lost works by Aeschylus and Sophocles, as well as on the value of the papyri for the constitution of the text of their preserved tragedies. The essays are equally divided between Aeschylus and Sophocles, and touch on all the major questions which the study of papyrology has raised for the philological and literary research on the two great tragedy writers. Both for the prestige of the authors and for the variety of the topics addressed, the volume offers an interesting and authoritative picture of the 'state of the art' of the studies in this regard, in light of the interrelationships between papyrology and Greek literature.

Guido Bastianini, Full Professor, teaches Papyrology at the University of Florence. He directs the Papyrological Institute «G. Vitelli» and is vice-president of the Association Internationale de Papyrologues. His research has focused on the Roman administration in Egypt, the Hellenistic epigram and papyri with philosophical content. Among his main publications: with J. Whitehorne, Strategi and Royal Scribes of Roman Egypt (1987); with D. Sedley, Commentarium in Platonis «Theaetetum» (1995); with C. Gallazzi and C. Austin, Posidippo di Pella. Epigrammi (2001). Angelo Casanova, Full professor of Greek literature at the University of Florence until 2012, was four-time director of the «G. Pasquali» Department of Sciences of Antiquity, as well as editor (together with Guido Bastianini) of the series of the Papyrological Conferences which have been held in Florence since 2002. He is the director of the classical studies magazine "Prometheus". He has studied, in particular, the Catalogue of women by Hesiod, Diogenes of Oenoanda’s adherence to Epicurean philosophy, Plutarch’s anti-epicurean writings, fragments of Greek tragedies, and Greek comedies spacing from Aristophanes to Menander. Among his main publications: La famiglia di Pandora (1979), I frammenti di Diogene d’Enoanda (1984).
