The volume, which collects the proceedings of the international conference held in Florence in the spring of 2005, takes up the theme of the urban and rural revolts of the fourteenth century, which has known a certain oblivion in recent times compared to the extraordinary fortune it enjoyed above all in the 60s and 70s of the last century, driven by the troubled events of those decades. The sixteen essays that compose it, the work of specialists from five different European countries, develop three different forms of analysis within a chronological frame that refers to a wider fourteenth century, ranging from the last decades of the thirteenth century to the early fifteenth century , according to a consolidated and shared chronology.

Monique Bourin is Emeritus Professor of History of the Middle Ages at the University of Paris 1. She has focused especially on the forms of rural life in the western Mediterranean countries; in this context, she has published, with Robert Duran, a volume dedicated to peasant solidarity: Vivre au village au Moyen Age, 2nd edition, Rennes 2002. Giovanni Cherubini is Full Professor of Medieval History at the University of Florence. Among his most recent publications we can find Città comunali di Toscana, Bologna 2003; Pellegrini, pellegrinaggi, giubileo, nel Medioevo, Naples 2005. Giuliano Pinto is Full Professor of Medieval History at the University of Florence. Among his most recent works we could mention Campagne e paesaggi toscani del Medioevo, Florence 2002; Il lavoro, la povertà, l'assistenza. Ricerche sulla società medievale, Rome 2008.
